Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) patches have to be applied below the waist because they absorb more effectively into body areas with more fatty tissue, such as the lower abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.
You should avoid placing the patch:
- on or near your breasts
- over injured or damaged skin
- on areas where you have applied creams or talc
- under tight areas of clothing
- on folds in your skin
- on areas of skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight
How to apply HRT patches
When applying an HRT patch, ensure that your chosen skin area is clean and dry. Only take the patch out of its pouch when you are ready to use it to avoid damaging it or exposing it to moisture.
To apply an HRT patch, follow these steps:
- Carefully open the pouch and remove the patch.
- Remove the protective film from the patch, revealing the sticky side. Be careful not to touch this side. Place it against your lower abdomen, thigh, or upper buttock.
- Use your fingers or palm to firmly press down on the patch for 10 seconds. Ensure the patch is attached properly to the skin, particularly around the edges.
- Some patches may have two protective films on both sides. Only one side will be sticky. Once you’ve placed the sticky side against your skin, peel off the second film.
- Leave the patch on until it’s time for it to be removed.
HRT patches are typically waterproof and can be worn when bathing and showering. However, avoid scrubbing the area too hard, as it may loosen the edges of the patch.
How long do HRT patches last?
HRT patches typically need to be replaced one to two times a week, but this may differ depending on the brand you use.
Some brands can be left on every day for several weeks, which can be beneficial if you think you may forget to replace your patch regularly.
A healthcare professional can help you understand your options and determine which hormone therapy method will be best for you.
