Yes. Omnitrope needs to be stored in a refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C).

Omnitrope comes in two forms:

  • a liquid solution in a pen delivery system
  • a powder in vials that you mix with a provided liquid to make a solution

Both forms are given as an injection under your skin.

Omnitrope contains the active ingredient somatropin. This is a biologic medication, which means it’s made from parts of living organisms. Like many biologics, this drug can deteriorate quickly if not stored properly. As the drug deteriorates, it loses effectiveness.

Omnitrope should not be frozen. It should also not be exposed to light, so the manufacturer recommends keeping it in its original carton whenever possible.

How long can Omnitrope be left at room temperature?

It’s recommended that you take Omnitrope out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before injecting a dose. After injecting a dose, you should immediately return any remaining medication to the refrigerator.

Omnitrope should not be left out of the refrigerator longer than the recommended time of 30 minutes. Exposure to temperatures outside of refrigeration can decrease the drug’s effectiveness.

The manufacturer of Omnitrope recommends leaving the medication out for 30 minutes before injecting a dose in order to bring the drug to room temperature. While you can inject Omnitrope cold, some people find it more comfortable to inject the drug at room temperature.

The length of time Omnitrope is considered safe and effective after the first use depends on the form of the drug.

Omnitrope cartridges

Omnitrope cartridges should be stored at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). It is best to store them in the carton or storage case they came with.

Once a pen contains a cartridge, do not separate them. Between doses, store the pen containing the cartridge in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). (Pens without cartridges can be stored at room temperature.)

Omnitrope cartridges must be discarded 28 days after their first use. (The pen can be loaded with a new cartridge and used again.)

Do not use Omnitrope cartridges if they’ve expired or been frozen.

Omnitrope vials

Before use, store the vials in a refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C).

After mixing the powder and the liquid solution, store the mixture at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) and use it within 21 days. Dispose of any unused portions after this time.

Do not use Omnitrope if it’s expired or cloudy, contains particles, or has been frozen.
